Has your dyed blonde hair turned yellowy?
Lightened hair often turns brassy over time. To understand why this happens we need to understand what happens to hair when you lighten it.
Turning to the box dye might seem like an easy way to cover up the yellow tones, but covering colour with colour is not going to help your hair in the long run. Using a dye containing ammonia only damages the hair. The colour can be updated in a much more gentle fashion.
The easiest way to tone down brassy hair is to use an ashy toner to neutralise the yellow colour. Toners are a light type of hair colourant mostly consisting of direct dyes, and they are designed to pull the overall tone of the hair in a specific direction of the colour wheel.
For example, a blue or purple toner will help counter any yellow or orange tones in the hair and make the colour more neutral.
You can leave the toner in the hair for 10-15 mins or longer if needed and toners can be used multiple times, as they do not damage the hair.
Do make sure to wear gloves during application as the pigments can stain!
You can maintain the colour by using a small amount of toner at each hair wash session. For example, you can add a small amount of toner to your shampoo and conditioner and leave it on for a few minutes before rinsing out.
Purple shampoo is also a great way to maintain your colour. Purple shampoo contains a small dose of toner which it deposits at each wash, and it is designed to keep blonde hair bright and counter those brassy yellow tones.
Purple shampoo can be used as needed, be that each wash or once a week.
Don’t go dyeing brassy hair with a permanent shade – instead, maintain the colour with toners!
You will also want to take good care of your hair to keep the colour vibrant for longer – strong, healthy hair maintains colour better than damaged hair.
