What is a Twin flame?
There are many theories about souls that are uniquely tied to ours. Many search for “the One”, or their “other half”.
Some say this “twin soul” or twin flame is part of the same soul group, and thus a type of soulmate. (You can read more about different types of soulmates here.)
The ancient Greeks believed that at the creation of the universe, each human was split into two. Each soul would spend their lifetime looking for the other half.
A number of people do believe this other soul will somehow “complete” them and make them whole.
Whichever one of these beliefs speaks to you, many of us do believe in the concept that there are 2 souls seeking to unite.
I feel most in line with the definition at lonerwolf – that twin flames are souls that have agreed to reincarnate together several times. They are not your other half or any sort of missing part. Rather, they are another unique, complete soul such as yours. Together your individual souls have chosen to form a bond with one another. Together you will grow.
When will I meet my twin flame?
There is a lot of literature about twin flames, which can make it confusing to understand what it is all about. In the spiritual community there are people who might be seeking out their twin flame expressly.
We believe your twin flame comes to your life when the time is right. In fact you might never meet them in this lifetime at all.
While you might not meet your twin soul in this life, you are likely to have met them many times before in previous lifetimes. This is because the bond with the twin flame extends beyond lifetimes, and the two souls come together over and over again through multiple lives.
Your twin soul will often come to your life as a lover, though this is not necessary – some twin flame relationships are platonic.
The twin flame appears in your life when you are both ready to welcome each other and the kind of enlightenment the relationship brings. Some believe you only meet your twin when both of your souls have matured enough to experience this deeper kind of love. You do not meet them when you are expressly seeking them out.
You might meet your twin flame unexpectedly. There may be signs that you are getting closer to meeting them, or you may feel their presence very strongly after you have come to know them.
You might be longing for them, and feel at home once you can be in their presence. As your twin soul is so closely tied to you, you will sense them when they are near and grow alert to their whereabouts.
What distinguishes twin flames from soulmates?
The twin flame may have lived a very different life path to yours. Yet your paths come together in a perhaps unexpected way.
Your twin soul is like a mirror to you – they are not completely like you. They are not your opposite either. Instead, they seem to complement you. Perhaps where you are shy, they are more bold. Where one of you is chaotic, the other is organised. Your strengths and weaknesses balance each other out.
This is the reason your twin flame is also called the mirror soul. They will challenge you and make you reflect on parts of yourself, helping you grow and to strengthen your weaker parts.
Our soulmate connections are often meaningful to us because we feel so alike with them. Soulmates bond over similarities and are hesitant to disagree. A twin soul will, instead, challenge you to become your higher self.
The twin flame relationship is not a toxic dynamic where you feel threatened or where there is constant disagreement (this might be a feature of karmic relationships, also a part of our soul’s growth). Instead, you feel safe with revealing your vulnerabilities with the other person and any disagreements are productive.
Despite the differences between the two of you, you share similar values at the core and your vision of life is the same. This is what guides you to build together towards your joint life purpose.
What is a twin flame connection like?
Perhaps people are so intent on finding their twin flame because they believe this will be the ultimate, most powerful romantic experience of all. Meeting the twin soul will indeed feel powerful – it is the most intense kind of soul encounter a human soul can experience.
But twin flame connections are not only just blissful. They experience challenges and disagreements too, but these will be key to helping each individual become a better version of themselves.
The twin flame relationship will both challenge and heal. Some relationships, such as karmic ones, serve mostly to challenge and teach us. Other soulmate relationships might bring us a sense of serenity and belonging. Twin flame relationships contain elements of all of these things, to take us to the higher beings we are meant to be. This is why we only meet them when we are ready for such intense development. Twin souls help each other grow and achieve a higher purpose together.
There is a magnetic attraction between you two. You may feel like you know your twin and what they are going through, despite being apart. The relationship is characterised by intensity and passion. You feel things deeply together.
Yet despite the intensity, you do not feel obsession about them. It’s as if you know they will always be in your life, despite any challenges you might face or the push and pull dynamic you may experience.
There is a deep understanding between you – your fights are constructive rather than hurtful, and you always forgive each other. A twin flame relationship is not based on need.
Your connection is not limited to just one type – romantic, friendship, teacher. Rather, you will have all of these roles in each others’ lives.
There might be synchronicity – eg you were both in the same place at the same time sometime in the past, or you both keep seeing the same numbers. As if there were signs building up to your meeting.
While you may be excited to meet your twin, this relationships cannot be forced. You will find them when your soul is ready – you may not even meet them in this life.
Mature and experienced old souls are more likely to encounter theirs as they have learned life’s lessons. You only meet your twin when your soul has done enough learning on its own and is ready to start learning together.
